7/24/2008 – Portland – Community Symposium for the Summer Institute on Youth Mentoring
Community Symposium on Youth Mentoring - Portland - 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Overview:
Portland State University, Oregon Mentors, and the Juan Young Trust have partnered to bring you a symposium addressing issues of diversity in youth mentoring. Join us to hear nationally recognized scholars share recent research and lead discussions on the following three themes: 1) Culture, Race, and Ethnicity in Mentoring; 2) Mentoring Latino Youth in Schools; 3) Mentoring and Self-determination among Youth with Disabilities. Professional staff and volunteers of mentoring and youth development programs are invited. Participants must RSVP with Oregon Mentors by July 22nd. Limited space.

Featured Speakers
Bernadette Sanchez, Ph.D., is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at DePaul University. She is an expert on the formal and informal mentoring relationships of Latino adolescents and cultural processes in volunteer mentoring relationships, especially when mentors and youth are from different races, ethnicities, or cultures.
Michael Karcher, Ph.D., Ed.D., is Associate Professor in the College of Education and Human Development at University of Texas-San Antonio. Professor Karcher is an expert on cross-age peer mentoring and is conducting research on effective interactions with Latino youth in school-based mentoring. He is a co-editor of the Handbook of Youth Mentoring.
Laurie Powers, Ph.D., is Associate Dean for Research in the School of Social Work and Director of the Regional Research Institute for Human Services at Portland State University. She is an authority on promoting self-determination among persons with diverse abilities and interventions involving mentoring and individualized coaching of youth with disabilities.
Thomas Keller, Ph.D., is the Duncan and Cindy Campbell Professor for Children, Youth, and Families with an Emphasis on Mentoring in the School of Social Work at Portland State University. His research investigates the development and influence of youth mentoring relationships in both school and community settings. He is the Director of the Summer Institute on Youth Mentoring.

Kick off to Portland State University’s Summer Institute on Youth Mentoring - Portland - 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Overview:
Join us as we kick off the 2008 Institute with a panel discussion featuring national experts in the field of youth mentoring. A reception will immediately follow the panel discussion. This event is open to the public, but attendees must RSVP by July 23rd.

The panel discussion will feature Thomas Keller (Portland State University), Jean Grossman (Princeton University), Michael Karcher (University of Texas – San Antonio), Laurie Powers (Portland State University), Bernadette Sanchez (DePaul University), Belle Liang (Boston College), and Marcelo Diversi (Washington State University).
