Program Description

Mentor Portland works with youth between the ages of 8-14, who are experiencing serious interruptions to their family life such as parental incarcerated parent or are in foster care. The youth in our community all have different stories and different struggles, but need is the same: someone they can trust, someone who's consistent, someone they can look up to, and a sense of safe community. A mentor's year-long presence has a direct and positive impact on youth, whether that is higher school attendance; improved social skills; healthier family relationships or the just ability to trust. Youth aren't the only ones whose lives can change from this friendship, mentoring can change two lives - theirs and yours.

Activities bowling, horseback riding, community service and beautification, and cultural events. We also provide a weekend at Camp Collins. Here pairs have the opportunity to strengthen their relationship and have a great time with a challenge/ropes course, teambuilding activities, nature viewing, and evening campfires.

Mentor Portland provides mentors with valuable skills in building their relationship through professional training. Pairs are on teams with a team leader, who is a former mentor. Activities may include a mentor pair, a team, or the whole community.
